白棕绳是以剑麻为原料捻制而成的。它的抗拉力和抗扭力较强，耐磨损、耐摩擦、弹性好，在突然受到冲击载荷时也不断裂。白棕绳主要用于受力不大的缆风绳、溜绳等处，也有的用作起吊轻小物件。白棕绳按股数多少可分为三股、四股和九股三种。

浸油白棕绳有耐磨、耐腐蚀和防潮性能，但由于受油中所含酸的影响，强度比未浸油的白棕绳大约下降10%，同时挠性下降，自重增加，成本上升，故不常被采用
